Our Key Aim
To raise the profile of philanthropy in Herefordshire, connecting donors effectively
to the local community.
About Herefordshire Community Foundation

- A NATIONAL MOVEMENT: We are part of a national movement of Community Foundations
– a full member of the UK Community Foundation Network.
- WITH A SPECIFIC SENSE OF PLACE: We are a geographically based trust, in Herefordshire
and for Herefordshire, with broad charitable objects.
- A SUCCESSFUL GRANT-MAKER: We have a very successful track-record in grant-making,
acknowledged by the Government’s Local Network Fund as one of the most successful
Local Network Grant-makers, with over £1 million distributed to local organisations
concerned with young people over the life of the scheme. We also distribute grants
for Herefordshire Primary Care Trust and BBC Sport Relief amongst others.
- AN EFFECTIVE SERVICE TO DONORS: Our local knowledge and understanding of the county,
and its needs across all areas of voluntary endeavour (youth, health, social care,
environment, arts, sports, rural regeneration, etc.), is significant. We work in
close partnership with Herefordshire Voluntary Action, the main co-ordinating body
for the voluntary sector in the county. We provide an effective service to donors,
ensuring that their funds are effectively invested, both to build the funds, and
also to ensure good community investment through our grant-making.
- WE UNDERSTAND OUR COMMUNITIES: We recognise that our communities and our voluntary
organisations are the social “glue” that binds our county together. We also recognise
that there are many challenges that face our communities and our voluntary organisations
– many people have less time to volunteer; there are increasing social and economic
pressures in this county, particularly in our agricultural sector; we need to provide
more opportunities for young people, in both our urban and rural areas; we recognise
that in the midst of this beautiful county, there is deprivation and isolation.
- FUND DEVELOPMENT, NOT FUNDRAISNG: We know that the people of Herefordshire are generous
when it comes to raising funds for causes in the county – we, though, want to do
something different, which does not undermine this generosity: we want to build long-term
endowment funds, which can ensure that funds are available for the future to support
this wealth of community and voluntary activity. We are concerned with fund development,
not fundraising.
- THE GRASSROOTS CHALLENGE: This fund has now closed. It raised about £330,000 in “new”
funds for the county, and was very successful.
